New Rule in County Cricket: Essex Becomes First to Use Injury Substitute

Lahore (Sports Desk): Under a newly introduced rule in English domestic cricket, Essex has become the first team to use an injury substitute player.

On the very first day of the County Championship, team captain Tom Westley was forced out of the match due to a finger injury after being struck by a ball from Sonny Baker. He retired hurt after scoring 28 runs, and the medical team later confirmed that he could not continue in the match.

In this situation, the team sought permission from match referee Steve Davis and included 21-year-old all-rounder Noah Thain as a substitute.

According to the referee’s decision, Noah Thain will not be allowed to bowl but can bat, giving the team an opportunity to use an additional batter.

Under the new rule, allowing a substitute player in place of an injured one is being seen as an important development aimed at ensuring player safety and providing greater flexibility to teams.
