“External Pressure Was the Biggest Challenge While Working with National Team”: Former Head Coach Gary Kirsten

Lahore (Sports Desk): Former Pakistan cricket team head coach Gary Kirsten said that during his tenure with the national team, he faced unusual interference and external pressure, which made effective planning and implementation difficult.

In a recent interview, Gary Kirsten explained that under such circumstances, providing a clear direction as a coach becomes a major challenge. He emphasized that when a coach is given responsibility, they should have full freedom to execute their strategy, as repeated interference negatively affects team performance.

He added that immediate or harsh reactions to poor performance, such as disciplinary measures, harm the team environment and create instability. While changing the coach may seem like an easy solution, he noted that this approach is not beneficial in the long term.

Although language barriers existed to some extent during his tenure, Kirsten said that cricket itself serves as a shared language, facilitating communication between players and coaches and improving on-field coordination. Overall, he described his experience with the national team as positive and praised Pakistani players for their professional skills.
